Operation Manual Video
The following video goes over almost every aspect of how to operate EQMapper 3D. It’s a bit long, but worth it if you really want to get the most out of it.
Tips and Tricks
There are some cool tips and tricks you can use to enhance the functionality of the Earthquake Mapper 3D software.
Add Earthquakes to EQMapper’s Database
EQMapper is fantastic software, but the only way to keep the database up to date is to run the software 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Who can do that?
For those who can’t, there is a way to process data from the USGS Earthquake Catalog that can keep things up-to-date for you. Simply follow this short video guide.
You can process massive quantities of USGS earthquake data into the Earthquake Mapper software using this method.
The Earthquake Mapper software is a bit of a resource hog. It works best on faster computers running with modern graphics cards. The latest and greatest graphics cards aren’t necessary, but something more than the bare-bones works far better and more fluidly than older hardware. If the software seems slow and kludgy, change the number of displayed quakes to something smaller. That may help. Your other option is to purchase a better graphics card.
If when you first launch the software, it displays an error that reads something like: “0.00 is not a valid floating point,” you can fix this (at least temporarily until we come out with a patch for it) by doing the following.
In America, the period is used to denote fractional decimal values like 1.23 but in other countries, the comma is used like this: 1,23
To fix the problem so the software will load, it is necessary to change the Windows definition of what represents that symbol (is it a period or a comma).
On Windows 10, go to the Control Panel. Click on “Change date, time, or number formats.” If you can’t find it, make sure the control panel is shown by Category (the “View by: ” section should be changed to Category).
After you click on the Change Date, Time or Number Formats option, click on the “Additional Settings” button near the bottom.
In the window that appears, you will see: “Decimal symbol” followed by a box containing the symbol representing floating point numbers. I suspect for you, it is shown as a comma. If you change it to a PERIOD (.) and then Apply the settings (or click OK), it will work.
Re-run EQMapper and voila, it should start working properly.
Bugs or Problems?
The Earthquake Mapper software is not free from all bugs. Although care has been taken to eliminate them, we are aware of a few lingering issues that are non-critical. Some of you may find other issues we are not aware of.
If you run into what appears to be a bug, or if you experience problems with the software, please let us know by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org. We will look into it and try to provide patches to the software over time.
